Located in Pianello del Lario (CO) in a splendid 19th-century cotton mill, the Museo Barca Lariana preserves a heritage unique in the world. In the museum’s rooms and warehouses, over four hundred historic boats are kept, including rowing boats, gondolas, fishing boats, hunting and smuggling boats, inboard and outboard motorboats, steamboats for passenger transport, three-point racing boats, sailing boats and ancient working craft.
Among the most important pieces, the museum houses the two oldest gondolas in the world, one of which is perfectly preserved and complete with sails; the Laura I° Abbate, the first craft to break the 200 km/h barrier; the sailing boat Merope of Agostino Straulino, gold medal at Helsinki in 1952; the Cisko-Yu, a spectacular English Thames A-class sailing boat from the late 19th century and one of the last traditional craft still in existence on Lake Como.
The latest project was the inauguration of the Riva Room, a collection of the finest runabouts produced by the famed Sarnico brand, a tribute to Carlo Riva, the man who elevated the concept of the boat to an object of desire and a symbol of Made in Italy around the world.
In short, it’s impossible not to see it!
